What is Refractory Depression?

Treatment Refractory Depression (TKD) refers to Depression that is defined as depression that has not responded to other treatments such as anti-depressants or therapy.

Most anti-depressant medications work by changing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, more specifically serotonin and dopamine. Ketamine works directly on the receptor on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) as an antagonist (inhibitor). Unlike other anti-depressants, which can take weeks to work, ketamine works immediately to reduce the symptoms of depression

The treatment we recommend for patients with TKD is once a week infusion for four to six weeks and then as needed. Every person is different but the average efficacy of ketamine can be anywhere from one to six month, with the average being about every 2-3 months.

Ketamine can work quickly to relieve the symptoms of depression and its effectiveness lasts for long periods of time after the treatment.
